NLP Sessions with Practitioner Tam Johnston
As a certified and highly experienced NLP coach and Master Practitioner, I offer in-person Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) coaching and NLP therapy in central Brighton and Hove.
I know how important face to face sessions can be when you want help, understanding and to have someone in the room to connect with and work through it with you. Using an integrated blend of NLP, and other modalities, I help you get the changes you are after by working with the underlying structure that you wish to change or enhance. In short, less talking, more changing how things are patterned and wired.
NLP focuses on how your brain constructs your thoughts and perceptions of yourself, others and the world you live in. This influences how you experience things and how you respond. It’s far less about ‘why’ you are like you are, and far more about how to shift what’s been running on autopilot and to ‘wire-in’ how you want to be instead.
That means we can get to the core issue and transform it fast; so you want change but don’t fancy months of digging around in the past, it may be for you.
My approach
I’m warm, compassionate and, (when appropriate) like to bring a bit of playfulness and humour into our exploration together. I’m kind, straight-talking and practical in my approach, with a determination to get you where you want to be through the quickest and most effective route. We work as a team. NLP works at its best with an attitude of curiosity and an open-mind. If you bring that, I’ll focus on the rest and we’ll do it together.
Working with me, your in safe, capable and experienced hands. I’ll naturally integrate NLP with other approaches and modalities from my comprehensive toolkit and expertise, to ensure a flexible and tailored approach, using the most effective and efficient skills specifically for you. You can find out more about what I can help with below and read about my expertise or get to know more about me here.
What I can help with
This can be more therapeutic NLP work, such as anxiety, stress responses, phobias, trauma patterns, low self-esteem, or a loud inner critic that seems to run the show! We’ll ensure we find and work on the ‘root’ of the issue, so we ensure it’s changed for good, as well as installing healthier responses, habits and ways to feel.
Or, you may be after a more performance and personal development focus, working towards enhancing and becoming the ‘best version’ of yourself using NLP techniques and a more coaching approach. The common thread is that it’s practical, solution-focused, and designed to create change that sticks.
I also offer a Havening clinic in Brighton as well, if integrated science-back body and somatic based work is what you’re looking for. You can find out more HERE.
Where we can see each other
I work both in person and online, depending on what suits you best. Alongside my established London Marylebone Practice , you can book NLP sessions in Brighton and Hove, or choose online sessions if that’s easier, you’re not local, or you simply prefer working from home.
The Brighton sessions are held at a discreet professional practice in the Brunswick area, with easy transport links and plenty to do nearby if you’ve got time to spare. It’s right in the middle between Brighton and Hove (actually… if you know, you know 😉). And if you’re travelling in from elsewhere in East Sussex, Brighton is often the easiest place to get into for in-person work.
Fear of fainting and medical procedures: After first blood taking visit: I am still feeling so chuffed about yesterday and what it means for the rest of my life - I have done it now so I know that I can, whereas before I came to you I truly believed I could NOT.
Second visit: “I thought, I'm doing it and I can't even feel it and I'm fine! - this was the moment that I now know everything has changed. So today, I really really got there- I now feel confident I can do it again with no fear of fainting and am keen to try and give blood.
Tam, your work is truly amazing and life changing!

Tam gets such utter satisfaction from your outcome and progress; it is awesome to be around her, she just so wants you to get it!
She very much has your best interests at heart, and is so very adept at getting to the core of the issue. You really feel that you are important to Tam and that she really cares about you.

‘I was a little sceptical at first but have to admit that Tam nailed it’

I wanted to email and say thank you once again for the session yesterday. I am still buzzing from it and haven't been able to stop thinking about the insights we discussed! I feel a lot more 'comfortable' with myself since our chat which, whilst not appearing to be the greatest compliment, is actually huge. It's more than any therapy has provided
Paul
If you are looking for someone to help you to focus on what you want, to ensure that you don’t run back to old ways of thinking and to make you feel energised and completely positive about your future, then speak with Tam.

It was the care that was put into understanding the issue – and tailored approach, that helped achieve such an amazing result – I would never have thought it possible to overcome a lifelong spider phobia in such a short time!

Before I had this therapy, I was suicidal. I had tried medication and years and years of all types of therapy, including CBT, the person centred approach, lots and lots of therapists....after my first session with Tam I came home and forgot about it, but something really odd happened. There were no more negative voices at all. There still aren't, which I still find amazing. Instead, my mind was filled with positive thoughts. The impact has been quite amazing, and even people who don't know me very well have noticed it. After the second session where we worked on flashbacks [from childhood sexual abuse] I was again, really stunned. I still remembered what happened, but it was void of any emotion. It was amazing. I still had flashbacks, but felt no emotion when they occurred, could carry on as normal, and they had no impact on me at all. My life has totally changed. For anyone who is considering this, please just do it. It is life changing. I have gone round telling everyone it's the closest thing to actual magic I have ever experienced.

Tam is provocative, astute and gentle in her approach. She listens carefully and asks skillful questions to help you to untangle your thoughts. I always leave a session with new insights, strengthened resources and trust in myself to make the changes that I want to make. She rocks!

Since our session, I can’t stop smiling, everyone has commented on it. I don’t care about what others think of me anymore, it’s just not on my radar. I'm handling the relationships with my difficult family so much better, they don't get to me in the same way.

Treatment of severe generalised claustrophobia after one 2 hour session: "I'm doing good! I took the lift today and it was ok, planning to make a habit of it :) I went on the tube today in my lunch break just to keep the momentum. My husband is so pleased he's almost as proud of me as I am :) I really appreciate your help, thank you again".

I wanted to say thank you so much for the sessions so far. I can't believe how much clarity you have helped me gain in such a small space of time. You are one clever lady, and the gifts you offer ripple out far beyond the person sitting opposite you, way out into the world, creating really good things.
Simone
I am the happiest I have been for a very long time! Now, I am heading to my target weight with ease, I am exercising more and have taken up dance lessons to get me more active and widen my social circle. Relationship-wise, I feel confident and ready to meet someone and have an amazing, fulfilling relationship with them. So yes, I am happy, smiling and looking forward to every day and the excitement it holds. Thankyou.

The most common QUESTIONS I get asked
Is NLP therapy the same as NLP coaching?
They overlap a lot, and the difference is usually the focus, not the toolset. NLP can be used in a more therapeutic way (anxiety, phobias, trauma patterns, stress responses) and it can also be used for coaching-style outcomes (confidence, performance, communication, habits, motivation).
My style is naturally coaching-led, even when we’re working on more therapeutic themes. It’s practical, structured, and centred around change you can actually feel and apply. My extensive experience and the knowledge I’ve accumulated over the years, means that we can safely and effectively work through areas naturally suited to therapeutic knowledge and approach, but my style is frequently described as refreshingly informal and practical, regardless of the depth and professionalism required for the topic we are working on.
What happens in an NLP session with you?
We start by getting really clear on what you want to be different, and explore what’s currently keeping the pattern in place together. From there, we look at how your mind is constructing the experience. The thoughts, meanings, images, language, and the “rules” your brain is running in the background.
Sessions often feel conversational, but they’re they are very purposefully targeted. I’ll guide the process, we’ll do specific changework, and we’ll keep coming back to what will make the biggest difference safely and effectively. The aim is a clear internal shift and. if needed, a practical way to reinforce it.
I’ve seen “NLP counselling” in directories. What does that mean?
It’s often just a directory label. I get that it can be confusing, as some platforms group NLP under “counselling” categories, even when the practitioner doesn’t describe themselves as a counsellor.
I don’t refer to myself a counsellor simply because I’m not! Counsellors undergo specific psychotherapy training and their approach and the timelines involved are very different.
I’m an NLP therapist and coach, and I work in a practical, change-focused way. If you’re not sure what you need (therapy, coaching, something in between), that’s common. There’s something out there for everyone and we can talk it through and work out the best fit for what you need, what you’re already tried and what works best for you individually.
Can NLP help with anxiety, phobias, trauma patterns, self-esteem, and the inner critic?
These are some of the most common reasons people come to NLP, yes. NLP is particularly useful when you’re dealing with patterns that have become automatic, like your system reacts before you’ve had a chance to think.
That can show up as anxiety loops, phobic responses, old triggers, low self-esteem, people-pleasing, perfectionism, or a negative and harsh inner voice that never gives you a break!
The work focuses on shifting the underlying pattern, not just coping strategies. Everyone’s history and nervous system is different, so we tailor the approach to you. But the beauty with NLP is we are able to establish and target the ‘coding’ (for want of a better expression) of the brain and body, rather than relying solely on ‘talking’ around it.
Do online NLP sessions work as well as in-person?
For many people, yes. NLP is largely about how your brain is running patterns internally, and we can work with that very effectively online. Some clients prefer it because they feel more comfortable at home, and it can make the work easier to integrate into real life straight away.
The main difference is the practical setup, not the quality or effectiveness. You’ll need the privacy of an undisturbed space, stable internet, and a bit of uninterrupted time. If you’re choosing between online and in-person, we can decide based on what will support your best outcomes. I get that some prefer the idea of face to face, so that’s possible too.

Fancy A QUICK CHAT?
If you’re looking for NLP therapy or coaching and you want a calm, safe, practical approach with a highly experienced, accredited Practitioner, I’d love to chat with you.
It’s really helpful for both of us to have a phone call together before we schedule a first session.
It’s a chance to:
- answer your questions
- hear a little about what you want help with and what may be best for you
- check that I’m the right person for the job
- agree the right next step
Although it will be useful to know a little about your background and past experiences, rest assured, it’s mainly a practical ‘get-to-know’ each other conversation. We’ll save the rest for once we know each other.
